Do you celebrate Mothering Sunday or do you celebrate Mother’s Day?

Mother's Day Home Gifts

Each year in the UK we traditionally celebrate Mother’s Day. A time when we celebrate the women in our lives, mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, and very special women who may have no connection to us by blood but who are still part of our family. This leads to our question, do you celebrate Mothering Sunday or do you celebrate Mother’s Day?

The History of celebrating our special women

Mothering Sunday and Mother’s Day have morphed into the same day in the UK, but, did you know that they are two very separate occasions that have their own history?

Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday is an occasion celebrated by Christians. Back in the sixteenth-century people returned to their main ‘Mother Church’ for a service to be held on the Fourth Sunday of Lent, known as Laetare Sunday. Today the date of Mothering Sunday is still kept as the fourth Sunday which is why there is no set date for Mothering Sunday as there is for Christmas. The date upon which Easter falls is always the first Sunday after the first full moon that follows the spring equinox.

Mothering Sunday became a day where domestic servants were given the day off to visit their Mother/Main church, often attending with their own Mothers and family. It was usually the only time that the families could all gather together due to individual working commitments. It was not the norm to give servants free days off on any other day within the year, hence Mothering Sunday being extra special.
Mother’s Day owes its history to a lady born in the United States called Anna Jarvis. Anna started a movement to introduce Mother’s Day in 1914. Three years after her Mothers death she held a memorial ceremony to honour her mother and all other mothers, at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church, which marked the first-ever official observance of what is now known as Mother’s Day. Anna Jarvis hadn’t finished there though and embarked upon a campaign to make Mother’s Day an actual recognised holiday in the United States which as we all know succeeded.

Mother’s Day

In the 1920s as fashions changed and the custom of keeping Mothering Sunday had tendered to lapse in areas of Ireland and Europe. Constance Penswick-Smith, from the United Kingdom, was inspired by the works of Anna Jarvis. Constance created the Mothering Sunday movement and wrote a book in 1921 asking for a revival of the festival. The traditions of Mothering Sunday still practised by the Church of England and Church of Ireland were merged with the newly imported traditions in the wider society.

Not wishing to miss an opportunity, UK based merchants saw Mother’s Day as an important commercial opportunity and therefore promoted the occasion relentlessly in the UK. By the 1950s Mother’s Day was celebrated across all the UK and is still massively advertised today. People in the UK and Ireland started celebrating both Mother’s Day and Mothering Sunday on the same day – the fourth Sunday in Lent – which is why the two occasions appear to the same with many people not knowing the different histories behind the two events.

We often like to show our mothers and the special women in our life how important and loved they are by showering them with gifts and cards. From the home-made card and a tiny bunch of flowers, which a child is so very proud to present on Mother’s Day to the most expensive gift money can buy, we enjoy spoiling our mothers on their special day. If like us, you have got to the age where you seem to have given your mother all the traditional gifts and you need a little help thinking of something beautiful and useful, we have found the following gifts which we know our mothers will love.

The question now, which one do you choose?

Balance your mental wellbeing in your home

mental wellbeing in your home

In what has been an extraordinary year, due to the pandemic, the topic of mental health has been raised even more than before, and individuals who previously thought they never suffered from any mental health issues are starting to experience feelings that are totally new to them.

Mental health covers a multitude of areas.  No two experiences being the same, but did you know you can improve your mental health and wellbeing by looking at your home environment.

You may not have previously ever considered the connection, but your home environment is a large part of your mental wellbeing.  How you may ask is this possible?  How do you feel as you approach your own front door?  Your surroundings can directly influence your mood.

With this thought in mind, you can physically improve your well-being by improving your home’s layout and design.  No matter where you live and your individual circumstances, everyone deserves a home they love and can feel comfortable in.

To help you create your ideal surroundings, try some of the following ideas:

Help your home reconnect with nature using natural elements.

If you think about primitive man, they lived in and were therefore surrounded by nature in its natural state.  As man has progressed through thousands of years to what we are today, it is understood that humans are significantly happier when surrounded by nature.

We can, therefore bring nature inside to help improve our individual feelings and mood.

Of course, the first thing most of us think of when we think about nature being brought inside is plants and flowers, bringing the physical flora into your home and improving air quality. Still, there are additional ways you can reconnect with nature at home.

Painting walls green and adding wallpaper can help you feel connected to nature.

The Cole and Son Boscobel Oak metallic autumnal gold and claret wallpaper combine lions’ majesty with the beauty of branches and leaves.

If you wish to bring a feel of midsummer, the Cole, and Son Midsummer Bloom chartreuse, rouge and leaf green on parchment fit the bill beautifully.  You could literally be sitting on the floor with a picnic basket open, enjoying a midsummer afternoon, all without leaving your front door.

Natural materials such as leather or wood give the advantage of both texture and pattern variations which are found in the natural setting.

The Brown Leather Chesterfield Sofa has been upholstered in brown leather and has 4 hand turned legs constructed from 100% solid mango wood in a walnut finish.  This one piece of furniture brings together the natural colour of brown, with the luxury of natural leather and the solid mango wood in a walnut finish.  It is literally nature in a box.Brown Leather Chesterfield Sofa

Choosing the right colour

Colours can bring powerful memories to the fore.  They can affect people in many ways.  The colours you choose for your home are a direct reflection of who you are as a person.  Don’t think about what is currently fashionable but think about what you like.  The colours which you enjoy, which instigate happy memories and which make you feel happy.  Therefore, choosing the colour of a room is due to personal taste and the room’s purpose.

Different colours also influence the appearance of a room, light colours bring an expansive and airy look making rooms seem larger and brighter than they are whereas dark colours reduce the appearance of size so always take these points into consideration when making your choice.

Lighting can improve your mood

In the same way that colour can have a huge influence on your mood, lighting can have an equally powerful effect.

‘Warm Lighting’ can help your surroundings feel more welcoming and relaxing whereas candles can give both a cosy and romantic feel.  There are also products such as dimmer switches which can regulate your lighting to your mood.

The Smoked Glass Cone Pendant Light adds an element of industrial charm to any interior.

The Antique Gold Flamingo Lamp With Mustard Velvet Shade offers not only warmth but also add character and style to your cosy setting.

A tropically inspired lamp can also add a natural but artistic vibe to your living space. The Antique Bronze Palm Closed Leaf Table Lamp is the perfect lamp to illuminate any intimate areas.

As you will see there are different kinds of lighting to please all tastes and circumstances.

Choosing your home accessories

Add rounded or slightly unusual shapes to your home to provide balance.

Spherical shaped or rounded furniture and homeware can create calm and tranquillity to your home.

Rather than have a mirror with strong severe lines, try the Art 425 Mirror which offers a modern take on the classic sunburst style again bringing the outside in.

Art 425 Mirror

Or if your preference is art deco you can’t go wrong with the Jersey Fan Mirror.Jersey Fan Mirror

And don’t forget your cushions, this Pink Crushed Velvet Cushion Cover with flange edging brings texture and subtle colour to your room.

Have you ever daydreamed watching the clouds slowly move pass? Watching cloud formations can be relaxing and calming. Now, you can have your very own cloud in your home with the stunning Cloud – Toilet Paper Holder. Designed by French artist Bertrand Jayr, the CLOUD toilet paper shelf brings a little fresh air to the places that need it the most.

How to Create a Peaceful and Relaxed Sleeping Area Using Feng Shui

What is feng shui

What is feng shui and how does it work?

For those who are not familiar with Feng Shui, it is considered the pinnacle in building positive energy in your surroundings. It is a Chinese concept with a literal definition of feng shui being ‘Wind-Water’ – It is the art of channelling natural energy called ‘Chi’ to benefit health, energy, and wealth. There are five elements of feng shui. These are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.

It is believed that the presence and placement in our surroundings stimulate Chi and promotes wellbeing by reflecting on the basic principles of nature.
Using these principals, you can arrange your furniture placement and decide which materials you have in your bedroom.
As we all know the world is going through a difficult time currently and we all want good vibes especially now. Using these feng shui bedroom ideas you can make your bedroom your own area of tranquillity.

Think of using Soft Edges

It is said that rounded edges are great feng shui and helps promote a sense of comfort and safety, whereas harsh, straight-edged pieces of furniture which are often found in so many pieces of bedroom furniture can promote bad feng shui. Softer edges and natural materials promote good feng shui.
You may not think that this is possible! After all, the main piece of furniture in a bedroom is a bed and they are usually very rigid in their appearance. Take a look at this Faux Tan Leather King Size Bed, The beautiful material is so peaceful and the headboard and tail of the bed have wonderfully rounded edges.Tan Bed

Where to position your bed?

Where to place your bed is a crucial part of feng shui and there are a few points which you should consider.
Your bed should be central to a wall; however, it shouldn’t be in line with or close to a door. This it is believed will result in your energy being constantly pulled throughout the night. This may appear a little scary but it is an interesting point to note.
You should also try to place your bed in the centre of the room and not in line with the door. As opposed to the energy being pulled out of the door, placing your bed in the centre of the room will centralise the energy of your room and prevent it from escaping.

Choose Functional Furniture

Promoting good feng shui focuses on incorporating items which have a meaning and purpose. Ensuring that these items are attractive will also assist with feng shui meaning you can still be as creative as you wish and still ensure your individual character dresses your home.
Functional furniture includes wardrobes, chest of drawers, bedside tables etc. They are your bedroom storage and therefore perfect to have in your bedroom whilst they promote good feng shui. The black tweed 6 slot shoe storage bench is a practical storage piece that fits perfectly in your hallway space. It is designed to give classy but functional storage space to keep the entrance to your home looking smart and tidy. Shoe Storage

Declutter

Decluttering your room is a perfect way to bring good feng shui to your bedroom space. Be sure to actually declutter by disposing of items you no longer need or use rather than storing them. Feng Shui doctrine says that clutter should be kept to a minimum, especially in significant areas within your home such as your bedroom and living area.

Lighting – Use both Natural and Artificial Light

A combination of natural and artificial light promotes good feng shui. Natural light plays an important part, so try to utilise it to wake you up in the morning. There is no better feeling thank waking up with the sun streaming through the window.
When it comes to artificial light, a bedside lamp will help create a softer glow in your bedroom. The Vintage Industrial Glass Glow Lamp is a stunning lamp which will add an understated industrial glow to your room.

Nature

Our final point in to bring nature in. By their very nature house plants are a must for good balance, especially when feng shui is all about creating harmony in your surroundings. Plants are extremely important with respect to feng shui. They bring outside nature inside your home and allow your rooms to breathe. There have also been studies which have shown that the presence of plants in a home can reduce anxiety levels.

There is nothing like a Declutter to Transform and Organise your home

Ways to declutter my home

We all know that Spring is the usual time for a good Declutter and Spring Clean, but why wait until Spring?

Many of us have spent most of this unusual year working from home, so what could be better than having a good declutter, organise, clean, and revitalise your home all in time for Christmas.

Declutter – does the sight of piles of paperwork, newspapers, and magazines, or having shoes and bags lying around sound familiar.  Spending more time at home can result in you not noticing that the piles of ironing haven’t been put away or that junk mail hasn’t reached the bin.

You may manage to put everything away, but do you really need everything you have?  A major problem in today’s society is that many of us have far too much stuff.  Why not reduce the time you spend cleaning by creating harmony in your home and your mind by disposing of things you no longer need?

It can be a little frightening at first, letting go of items because you have always had them, but the sense of achievement you will feel once you have disposed of them will certainly be worth it.

There are many different systems in existence to assist with decluttering.  The KonMari method, devised by organising consultant, Marie Kondo, works on the ‘spark joy’ principle.  Kondo suggests you choose what you keep by holding, feeling, or wearing each item and if it doesn’t bring you joy or pleasure, then get rid.  Although this process has been a proven working method, it can take quite some time to complete.

Personally, we much prefer to succeed at decluttering by doing the 12-12-12 challenge.  It works by finding 12 items to throw away or recycle, 12 items to donate and 12 items to be returned to their proper home – go on admit it, how many items cluttering up your home don’t actually belong to you but have been borrowed, a special dish, your best friend’s jumper which you just had to wear to an evening out, you get the idea.  Now just imagine if everyone who lived with you did the same thing – 36 items decluttered by every person living at home.  You can even make it into a competition with a prize for the person who completes it first or manages more than 12 items in each category.

There is, of course, always the ‘four-box system’.  Label four big boxes, one is for items to keep, one to donate, one to store and one to bin/recycle.  The real trick of this system is not being tempted to ‘store’ too much.  You have to be strict with yourself to ensure the task is completed and you get the result you really want.

When decluttering your closet take a proper look at the contents.  Ask yourself if it fits, do you wear it, is it comfortable, when did you last wear it?  Be honest with yourself, if you haven’t worn an item or a pair of shoes in the last 12 months, are you really going to wear it again?

Once you have decided which shoes you are going to keep, why not find a way to store them that complements the harmony you have created for your home.

The multi tweed 4 slot shoe storage bench is a practical piece of furniture and is extremely useful offering 4 open shelves in the middle for shoes as well as 2 shelves on the left and right for boots.  Who could ask for more?

Multi Tweed 4 Slot Shoe Storage BenchLet’s start Cleaning.

So, you have decluttered your lovely home and now comes the time to clean.  Make a checklist of everything you want to do, don’t forget to add the skirting boards and behind the sofa, you know, the places that often get forgotten during a general tidy-up.

Don’t pressure yourself into cleaning the whole house all at once.  If you are short of time, save the big jobs like cleaning out the fridge or emptying the kitchen cupboards for another day.  Imagine a cold, wet Sunday when you don’t want to go out but don’t want to waste the day – the perfect time to conquer those big jobs.

Finally, it’s time to Organise

You have worked hard to declutter and clean your home.  Please don’t spoil it now by letting the clutter find its way back home.  Get organised and stay that way.

How often have you come home, taken your coat off and tossed it on the bannister or over the sofa?  This can be easily rectified by using a hat and coat stand.

This classy black metal coat rack is made from metal with an industrial style finish.

Black Metal Coat Rack

So now you have stored your boots, shoes, and coats you need to think about organising any clutter that you don’t want on show.  The Soho Black Collection Sideboard is a beautiful answer for the task.Soho Black Collection 4 Door Sideboard

Whether you want to declutter and organise your entire home or focus on individual areas, enjoy making a start – it can be so rewarding.  Have fun.

How to make a rental house into your home

How to make a rental house into your home

From the early 1980s property prices have continued to skyrocket, resulting in a significant rise in long term renting with individuals, couples and families renting long-term.  Renting is no longer thought of as a ‘stop-gap’ or ‘digs’ where you just rest your head.

It’s highly unlikely that whilst renting you will replace your landlord’s old kitchen or plumb in a new bathroom suite, but there are so many ways you can personalise your surroundings to make it feel like home without going against the terms of your rental contract.

Before you begin making any changes, you must be sure as to what you are allowed to change.  Some landlords have no issue with adjusting the paint colour of your walls; however, others may prefer less-permanent alterations.  You should always check your Tenancy Agreement and or check first with your landlord before carrying out any redecorating that is permanent.

You can, of course, add colour with bold furnishings rather than decorate the walls.  Consider adding a vibrate rug like the Brooklyn 21830 Multi Rug, available in a selection of fabulous on-trend colours and fun being both modern and stylish.

Brooklyn 21830 Multi Rug

Or have you considered possibly adding a bright chair or sofa?  What could brighten any area more than the Rose Velvet Armchair?

If you still want to add colour but not be quite as bold, why not look at the beautiful Emerald Velvet Chesterfield Sofa
Green Chesterfield sofa
…Or the Emperor Grey Velvet 2 Seater Sofa?  Both beautiful sofas provide stunning colour whilst being both luxurious and practical.

Coffee tables bring another area of individuality to make your rented house your very own home.  There are so many different materials and designs available to fit your preference.  Whether you are looking for an Antique Bronze Display Side table, a mirrored coffee table or a table with turned legs – there is a small table, a coffee table or a modern coffee table to suit all tastes.

Freestanding items are certainly a renter and a landlord’s best friend. There is no need to drill holes in the wall with free standing items.

Given the right lighting – every room can shine!

lighting

Given the right lighting – every room can shine!

Here are a few tips to improve the lighting in your living room.

We all know that flicking a switch turns on the light, but have you thought of the mood you wish to relax in?  The way your living room is lit should never be taken for granted.  With a little extra thought given to your lighting, your living room can become whatever you want it to.

What is your starting level of lighting?

The principal light in your living room can be provided using a pendant, chandelier, or spotlights.  This ensures good distribution of light together with any natural light you may have from windows, doors, or skylights.  This provides your living room with the practical lighting you require although principal lights can be just as pretty as softer light fittings.

The RV Astley Auxerre Pendant Lamp is splendid in its beauty

or maybe your taste calls for the Industrial Mesh Cage Black Ceiling Pendant

Adding Atmosphere!

Take into consideration what you use your living room for.  Do you want to sit and read a good book?  Adjustable desk lamps and table lamps are wonderfully versatile and can be easily moved to the area you wish to relax in.

Depending on your colour scheme there are countless colours and designs of lamps available.

A combination of bold and elegant, the Mayfair Rose Gold Table Lamp features elegant metallics to lighten and energise quieter areas of your home.

Whereas the Gable Table Lamp sophistication in a contemporary manner.

Along with the style and colour of your lighting, you may also want to think of the way different bulbs impact on your living room.  Soft or warm white bulbs have a traditional and cosy feel which can also give the impression of creating a larger room whilst being relaxed and welcoming.  At the other end of the scale, cool white light is more energising and ideal if you have an open plan area incorporating possibly a dining room and or kitchen.

The average modern living room has at least two different kinds of lighting.  The principal light referred to above, accompanied by either table lamps or possibly floor standing lamps.

The Byton nickel floor lamp finished in shiny nickel

together with Byton tall nickel table lamp adds a little sophistication and elegance to any interior surrounding.

Byton Tall Nickel Table Lamp

Using floor and table lamps provides your living room with a softer style of lighting rather than that of using the principal lights.

The Wow Factor

The use of contemporary lighting to create a striking focal point in your living room can transform a ceiling light into a piece of modern art.

The White and Gold Over-Table Pendant, for example, brings an understated yet stylishness feature to the dining area of any living room.

Pendant Lighting

Don’t forget the Walls!

Wall lighting is so versatile.  Directing a wall light to your favourite painting can bring your painting and your living room to life.  Additionally, wall lighting can brighten a darker area within your living room; you could possibly install wall lighting above your favourite reading chair and lose yourself in your book of choice with the ambience surrounding you.

Who could resist sitting under a Mayfair Rose Gold Wall Lamp? Rose Gold Wall Lamp

So, as you have read, given the right lighting – every room can shine!
